With the popularity of smart phones, laptops and other mobile devices, WiFi has become an indispensable part of the home and enterprise networks, and there are many ways to deploy WiFi networks. Among them, through the PoE technology is considered as the most commonly used ways to build enterprise wireless network, this tutorial will be described in detail.

Using PoE technology to power for wireless AP

The easiest way to provide WiFi to mobile devices is to set up a wireless AP on the wall or ceiling (see below), and in addition to access network, wireless AP also need to be powered by power cable to ensure work properly. Now, there are two main ways to power for wireless AP: powered by direct current or remote powered by PoE technology. However, due to the deploy location of wireless AP is very special, powered by a DC power supply does not always work, while PoE technology can use the existing Cat5 or Cat6 of network cable to transmit data signal, and also can send the current to wireless AP, eliminating the need for local power. Now, using PoE technology to power wireless AP is become more and more popular.

Using Ethernet cable to let wireless AP access network

Ethernet cable is an essential tool to allow network devices to access network, wireless AP devices are no exception. Currently, wireless AP devices are commonly use two kinds of network cable when accessing network: Cat5 and Cat6 network cable. These two network cables are both twisted pair, of which the anti - crosstalk performance of Cat6 network cable is superior to Cat5’s, and Cat6 network cable can be used in 10 Gigabit Ethernet, while Cat5 network cable is only can be used in Gigabit Ethernet. We need to choose appropriate type of network cable depending on different requirement when building enterprise wireless network.

Using PoE switch to supply power and network for wireless AP

PoE switch can transmit data signal to terminal network device via network cable, and also provide direct current for that device. In other words, it can supply power and network for wireless AP by using one network cable. The following figure is a simple example of building a corporate wireless network with PoE switches, Ethernet cables, wireless APs, etc.

Conclusion

To sum up, building a corporate wireless network is not as complicated as we thought, only PoE switches, PoE wireless AP, Ethernet cables are required.
