What are Sfp 10g sr s and sfp 10g sr?

What is SFP 10G SR S ?

SFP 10G SR S refers to a variant of the SFP 10G SR (10 Gigabit Short Reach) optical transceiver module. The "S" in SFP 10G SR S indicates that it is an enhanced or extended version of the standard SFP 10G SR module.

While the specific details may vary between manufacturers, the SFP 10G SR S module typically offers similar functionality to the standard SR module but with additional features or improvements. These enhancements could include better power efficiency, extended temperature range, advanced diagnostic capabilities, or compatibility with specific hardware platforms.

It's important to note that the exact specifications and features of an SFP 10G SR S module may vary depending on the manufacturer. Therefore, it is recommended to refer to the specific datasheet or documentation provided by the manufacturer for detailed information about a particular version of SFP 10G SR S module.

What is SFP 10G SR ?

SFP 10G SR refers to a specific type of SFP (Small Form-Factor Pluggable) optical transceiver module that supports 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10G) transmission over short distances using multi-mode fiber optic cables.

The "SR" in SFP 10G SR stands for "Short Reach," indicating that this module has a limited reach and is typically used for short-range applications. It operates using vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) technology and is designed to transmit data up to a distance of approximately 300 meters (984 feet) over OM3 or OM4 multi-mode fiber cables.

SFP 10G SR modules are commonly used in data centers, telecommunications networks, and enterprise-level network environments where high-speed, short-distance connectivity is required.

This one is actually pretty easy. SR stands for Short Reach, and LR stands for Long Reach. SR transceivers are almost always multi-mode, and optimized for high speeds over relatively short distances. However, the much higher-powered OM3 and OM4 formats can push that into the hundreds of meters for a single cable.
LR transceivers are designed for long-range communications, such as wiring buildings together on a large campus or even setting up a Metro Area Network (MAN). They can be either multi-mode or single-mode, and are almost always intended for 100m+ applications. Higher end cables and transceivers can support transmissions of several kilometers.

For your use case the S-class is a recommended and much more inexpensive option.
The non-S class are only indicated for environments requiring any of the following:
• OTN or WAN-PHY support
• Optics deployed in non-temperature controlled environments, e.g. rugged/ industrial (RGD)
• Optics plugged on platforms that require extended operating temperature range (EXT)
• TAA compliance
According to Cisco, S-class optics are intended for enterprise and data center 10G and 40G applications This new set of optics does not display several unnecessary features for these applications, bringing about a more attractive price. That explains why SFP-10G-SR-S price is lower than SFP-10G-SR price.
Except the price, there are some other differences. SFP-10G-SR-S optics aren’t TAA certified. However, the non-S-class optics such as SFP-10G-SR are all compliant to TAA. SFP-10G-SR-S optics only have COM (Commercial temperature range: 0~70℃). However, the temperature range of SFP-10G-SR can be EXT (Extended temperature range: -5~85℃), IND (Industrial temperature range: -40~85℃) and Storage temperature range (-40~85℃). In terms of protocols, SFP-10G-SR-S optics use Ethernet only, they cannot use OTN (Optical Transport Network) or WAN-PHY (Wide Area Network Physics).

Furthermore, SFP-10G-SR-S optics just have 10G and 40G applications so far which is specified for 10G and 40G enterprise and data center. Thus, if you don’t need any special features like extra tolerance for temperature, S-Class optics can save you a considerable amount of money.
