What is a Laser Diode?
2016-08-12

Definition:

A laser diode, or LD also known as injection laser diode or ILD, is an electrically pumped semiconductor laser in which the active laser medium is formed by a p-n junction of a semiconductor diode similar to that found in a light-emitting diode. The laser diode is the most common type of laser produced with a wide range of uses that include fiber optic communications, barcode readers, laser pointers, CD/DVD/Blu-ray Disc reading and recording, laser printing, laser scanning and increasingly directional lighting sources.

What Is a Laser Diode Module?

Laser Diode Modules are used in a variety of applications that require small sizes in addition to low power consumption with long operating lifetimes. Laser Diode Modules are lasers lab or OEM integration. Laser Diode Modules are ideal for applications such as life science, industrial, or scientific instrumentation, in addition to laser line generation or machine vision. Laser Diode Modules are available in a wide variety of wavelengths, output powers, or beam shapes.

Edmund Optics offers a range of lasers including a broad selection of Laser Diode Modules in colors such as red, green, blue, or violet. Red beams are commonly used due to their ease of sight in dark environments. Green lasers provide greater contrast on materials such as hot metal or wood, in addition to appearing brighter to the human eye than red. Laser Diode Modules designed for structured light illumination, harsh environments, or line generation are also available.

What Is a Laser Diode Driver?

In the most ideal form, it is a constant current source, linear, noiseless, and accurate, that delivers exactly the current to the laser diode that it needs to operate for a particular application. The user chooses whether to keep laser diode or photodiode current constant and at what level. Then the control system drives current to the laser diode safely and at the appropriate level.

What Is a Laser Diode Made Of?

Various forms of lasers like Gallium Arsenide laser, Helium Neon laser, Carbon dioxide laser etc are used in various applications. CD players use laser technology to read the optically recorded data in the form of Bits and Pits on the CD. Laser is a narrow beam of Photons emitted by specially made laser diodes.

Conclusion:

A laser diode, also known as an injection laser or diode laser, is a semiconductor device that produces coherent radiation (in which the waves are all at the same frequency and phase) in the visible or infrared (IR) spectrum when current passes through it. Laser diodes are used in optical fiber systems, compact disc (CD) players, laser printers, remote-control devices, and intrusion detection systems. Laser diodes differ from conventional lasers, such as the helium-neon (He-Ne), ruby, and gas types, in several ways.
