For OTDR Optical Port, PC or APC, Which Is Better?
2017-06-30

When we use the OTDR to test line and found no test jumper, we look around, and casually find a test jumper. The common situation is: two PC interfaces of the jumper are in a bare state without dust protection. Of course, we cannot see whether there is any problem on the jumper face with the eye, so we have no other idea than only hurry to plug into the OTDR optical port for use. The result is that, over time, our OTDR optical port end is constantly rubbed by the dust and the damaged face, which will lead to the more and more serious wear and tear of the optical port until the OTDR launch loss is too large to use. Optical wear is fatal for the OTDR. The charges of changing an optical port in many manufacturers are very expensive, then how do we try to avoid such a situation?

If we use optical fiber end magnifier to test such a jumper, we will found that the end surface is attached to a lot of dust particles, or the face has been severely worn, as shown below:

We know that the APC interface reflection performance is better than that of the PC interface. Of course, with the longer use of OTDR, then the optical port wear continues to increase, the reflective performance of both APC and PC will be significantly reduced, but in the same case of wear and tear, the reflective performance of the former is significantly better than that of the latter. Due to the lower degradation of APC interface reflection performance than that of the UPC, and the great impact by the optical reflection on the OTDR test performance, so APC interface is destined to be chosen for OTDR. We also call that OTDR factory produces APC optical interface, at the same time, we recommend customers to buy the OTDR with APC optical port, which not great benefits later maintenance of great benefits, but also delays the life of the optical port.
